I read the specs on Github and it looks like Kobo has some special way of showing footnotes, but is the footnote support in vanilla software really this rudimentary? Since this is just my own modifications to a PG book, I'm not terribly concerned with it and will probably just continue using KOReader, but it bothers me why the standard viewer cannot a display fully validating ebook properly. The kindle is detected by my OS and I can browse through its folders. and the footnote works both in Calibre's viewer (pop-up) as well as in KOReader (real footnote at bottom of screen) and to varying degrees in several other readers as well. Connect the Kindle to another computer to see whether it works or not. Change another USB port or wire to connect Kindle. Download the latest version of the Kindle app.
This book validates in EbookCheck 5.0 as Epub3.3. Install proper Kindle driver: just find Kindle or MTP USB device (under Portable Devices) in Device Manager and update or reinstall its driver. OTOH, tapping the back-link in the footnote does work, so maybe I'm just hitting the sweet spot? a device supports, that is part of converting books. Short tapping on the just brings out the UI, while long pressing just shows the highlight dialog - it doesn't seem to react at all to the link. So, with Calibre not detecting my old or new Fire to copy books over from one to the other, I resorted to transferring the books from my internal storage to SD Card. Calibre has to have a device definition to know what formats, size, dpi, etc. I'm now unable to have the Kindle/Books app see any of the copied books in. I then put the SD Card into the new Kindle (which has had all Amazon stuffs removed, bar the Books App. But this fails to work - the footnote does not display in a popup, nor does it take me to the actual footnote at the bottom of the file. So, with Calibre not detecting my old or new Fire to copy books over from one to the other, I resorted to transferring the books from my internal storage to SD Card.
